Training.

Here at Saltriver we offer two training divisions:

1.Retraining or Re-education of Horses.

Solving Behavioural Problems

At Saltriver we take pride in dealing with the most difficult of horses, we listen to the issues that are being presented from the owner, and then look at it from the horse’s point of view!

We then set about re - gaining the horses trust and solving the issue in a way the horse understands, we then set about teaching the horses owner about what was taking place and how they fit  the dynamic, and how to maintain the positive change in their horse when it comes home.

Re-mouthing or creating softness

Re mouthing is really a misnomer - to get softness or control of a horse you have to be able to control and direct a horses feet, and have timing to the horses release from your application of pressure.

When we have these horses come to us it is mandatory for the owner to spend time learning, and understanding the application of the technique to overcome this common problem.

Once the human understands and feels this – there will be no turning back for the horse and rider.

True softness comes from Feel and Timing and working with the inside of horse.

General Handling and Groundwork Training

We offer ground handling for all horses and weaners/foals.

This includes haltering and leading, tying up solid, feet handling and trimming, tackling an obstacle course and float/trailer loading.

Float Training and Re-education

Floating or trailering issues generally arise when a horse doesn’t have a solid foundation in ground handling and a person’s lack of feel and timing.

At Saltriver when a horse comes to us with this issue, we have to reprogram the foundation of being able to direct a horses mind by controlling his feet. By using this method our Idea will become the horses Idea and your horse will be able to self load.

We have had years of experience of dealing with people who are trying to load the reluctant horse into the float. Generally it is due to the handler’s lack of knowledge which leads to fear based reactions from the horse and owner, Saltiver offers lessons in float loading as we find this to be the successful outcome for a person to achieve long term success for travelling your horse.

We do offer a pick - up service with our truck for horses that will not travel.

Retraining the off the track thoroughbred Horse

Saltriver has retrained numerous of the track thoroughbreds that have gone onto success in other equestrian disciplines such as polo, polocrosse, dressage, jumping and hacking.

Success in this field is understanding what the process is involved for getting a horse to race which is mostly fear related and a lack of understanding of leg and rein aids

(Due to jocks balancing on heads and legs not long enough to reach their sides).

We will re- install a foundation similar to what we use when start a horse under saddle.

Create a Partnership by using Feel and timing to get Balance!

Feet Handling

At Saltriver all horses are taught to lead by their feet, we feel strongly that by teaching a horse to understand having pressure on the feet and legs and learning how to respond to that pressure, by learning to give or release to pressure, is fundamental to having a horse that is fence savvy or having anything wrapped around his legs react in a safe appropriate fashion to keep him and you safe!.

This method has saved many horses from have fatal leg injury’s due to being caught in a fence.

Feet handling is also paramount to having a horse happy to stand to be shod and you will find you will also have a happy farrier.

We have used this method instead of collar roping as we believe that it is important for a horse not to be confined and struggle during his learning process. And have had better results with the horses overall wellbeing by doing so.

We often have horses come to us with issues with being handled, particularly with handling of their feet and legs.

Issues of this nature can be serious to the horse and the owners, we determine why and what the issue is and work with the horse and owner to overcome the incorrect response to create a positive outcome for both!

After all if you really want to create a true partnership with the horse, you have to be able to control and direct his feet!
