Horsemanship School and Internship program

Saltrivers Internship program will teach you the principles of horsemanship consisting of developing your understanding of the application of feel and timing and the necessary communication between horse and rider to establish a partnership for life.

It will give students the opportunity to work with a wide variety of horses, to see and participate in all aspects of training, foals, colt starting, re-education and performance education.

Students can come for 1 week, 1 month or all 4 months.

The program will run from August to the End of December.
We will cover all aspects of horsemanship/colt starting/stud work and breeding, from the beginning to winning.

The horses to be worked with will be colts to be started, older horses, problem horses, sale horses, yearlings, foals and campaigning performance horses.

Students will be matched with a horse according to their experience and ability.

This time of year is also stud season in Australia, you will be exposed to matings, preparation of mares mating, assisting with foaling and handling stallions.

The Saltriver team will be competing at Campdrafting and cutting during this time and you will gain experience in these sports.  Polocrosse tournaments and a wide range of other equestrian disciplines are also attended.

Should a student be inclined there may be the opportunity to compete during these times.

During the month we will spend time working cattle, from beginning horses on cattle to experienced campaigners.

Students will work with between 3 and 5 horses per day these will vary depending on working requirements from newly started colts to conditioning of horses being campaigned.  Of course the rider’s confidence and experience will be taken into consideration with horses that are ridden.

Students are welcome to bring one horse free of charge to work during their stay.  Facilities include paddocks/yards.  Horses are fed twice daily and have 24/7 access to hay when pasture is low.
